Night 1 of Operation Mina Wean
Last night my wife and I began the process of trying to wean the youngest (Mina) from night feedings. I wanted to document this process for my own benefit.
April 25, 2012
The plan was for Amanda to be out of the room from 11pm - 5am.
She did well at sticking to that and I’m grateful to her for her persistence. It was certainly difficult for her to be in another room and hear some of the frustration from Mina. She stuck to the plan and allowed me to struggle appropriately with Mina and that helped me a great deal.
Beans (Mina) had her last feeding around 10:50 pm. She woke up around 12:15 am and I got her back to sleep in about 5 minutes. There was lots of crying, frustration, feet-kicking, and yelling (usually some form of Mama). She squirmed around the beds and I kept retrieving her, holding her close, whispering key phrases and then allowing her to express what she was feeling. This involved balancing when to hold tight (comforting) and when to let go (so that she could be angry and not get further frustrated with the situation by me “controlling” her expression).
(Man, I sound like a magazine ad.)
She woke up after 30 mins (12:45 am) and then we were up for 1.5 hours with some moments of quiet wherein she twitched or did the stutter breathing associated with strong crying. She eventually went back to sleep (2:15am) for an hour, was up (3:15 am) for another 30 mins and then went to sleep (3:45 am) until 5:00 am. At that time, Amanda came through the door like clockwork and we were able to sleep for the next couple of hours.
We’re all alive and well, albeit tired.
Stay tuned.
